Ankles, Legs, Hips and Knees
Ankles, Legs, Hips & Knees Pain
Pain in the ankles, legs, hips or knees often starts further down the chain — at the feet. Because your feet are the foundation of your body, how they align and move directly influences how well your ankles, knees and hips load, balance and function. When that foundation isn't stable, the joints above can be forced to compensate, and discomfort can follow.
What causes ankle, leg, hip and knee pain?
These pains are frequently mechanical — meaning they relate to how the lower limb moves rather than the joint itself being damaged. Common contributing factors include:
- Foot posture and alignment — flat feet, high arches or excessive rolling-in (pronation) can change how forces travel up the leg.
- Leg length discrepancy — one-sided pain can sometimes point to a difference in leg length.
- Previous injury — old ankle sprains or strains can subtly alter the way you move for years afterwards.
- Activity load — running, sport, dance and gymnastics place repeated demand on the lower limb, and so do active, growing children.
- Footwear — unsupportive or poorly fitted shoes can be an underestimated contributor.
Pain anywhere in the lower limb — in adults or children — isn't something to simply push through. It deserves a proper assessment to understand why it's happening.
How we assess ankle, leg, hip and knee pain
At Blueprint Podiatry in Tuggerah, our podiatry team looks at the whole picture, not just the painful spot. Every one of our three registered podiatrists holds a Bachelor of Podiatry, is trained in Foot Mobilisation Therapy, and is a certified Level 1 Running Coach — so genuine gait and running analysis is part of how we work.
A typical assessment may include:
- A detailed history of your symptoms, activity and footwear
- A gait and running assessment to see how your lower limb loads in motion
- Whole-limb and posture evaluation, including checking for leg length differences
- Footwear review
How we help manage it
Treatment is tailored to what we find, and may include:
- Custom orthotics — we use weightbearing 3D scanning and 3D-print patient-matched left/right devices in-house, so there's no external-lab delay.
- Foot Mobilisation Therapy to help improve joint movement and alignment
- Footwear and load advice to take pressure off irritated structures
- In-clinic options such as shockwave therapy and dry needling where clinically appropriate
- A graded return-to-activity plan for sport, running, dance or play
Our goal is to help manage your pain and address the underlying mechanics — not just settle symptoms in the short term.
When should you seek help?
Book an assessment if pain is persistent, one-sided, worsening, limiting your activity, or affecting a child's walking, running or sport. Early assessment often makes management more straightforward.
Frequently asked questions
Can a podiatrist really help with knee or hip pain — not just feet?
Yes. Because foot mechanics influence how the whole lower limb loads, addressing alignment, movement and footwear can help manage pain felt at the ankle, knee or hip. Our podiatrists assess the whole limb and posture, not just the foot, and refer on if something falls outside podiatric care.
Will my child need orthotics for their leg or knee pain?
Not necessarily. Orthotics are just one option. After assessing your child's gait, posture and footwear, our team will recommend what's genuinely appropriate — which might be footwear advice, Foot Mobilisation Therapy, activity changes or, where indicated, custom orthotics that we 3D scan and print in-house.
Do you offer Medicare or private health rebates for these appointments?
Yes. We accept Medicare EPC referrals (a small gap applies, not bulk billed) and offer HICAPS on-the-spot private health claiming. We also support DVA Gold and White card holders and NDIS (self- and plan-managed). Call us on (02) 4319 4004 if you'd like to check your options.
