Blisters

Painful foot blisters? Blueprint Podiatry in Tuggerah helps Central Coast patients treat and prevent blisters with footwear and gait advice.

What Are Blisters?

A blister is a small, fluid-filled pocket that forms between the upper layers of skin, usually in response to friction, heat or other irritation. On the feet, they're one of the most common complaints we see — and while many are minor, they can become genuinely painful or, occasionally, infected if not cared for properly.

The good news is that blisters are highly manageable and, in most cases, preventable. At Blueprint Podiatry in Tuggerah, our podiatry team can help you treat a current blister safely and, importantly, work out why it keeps happening so it doesn't return.

What Causes Blisters on the Feet?

Foot blisters are typically caused by repetitive rubbing or pressure against the skin. Common contributors include:

  • Ill-fitting footwear — shoes that are too tight, too loose, or not yet broken in.
  • Excessive moisture and heat — sweaty feet soften the skin and increase friction.
  • High-impact activity — running, hiking, sport and long days on your feet.
  • Foot structure and gait — the way you walk or run can concentrate pressure on particular areas.
  • Socks — seams, poor fit or non-moisture-wicking fabrics.

Recurring blisters in the same spot often point to an underlying mechanical or footwear issue worth investigating.

How Blueprint Podiatry Assesses and Treats Blisters

Our team of three registered podiatrists each hold a Bachelor of Podiatry and are certified Level 1 Running Coaches, which means we don't just treat the blister in front of us — we look at the cause.

For an active blister, we can:

  • Drain it using sterile technique where appropriate, to relieve pressure and reduce infection risk, while keeping the protective skin in place wherever possible.
  • Dress and protect the area to support healing and reduce ongoing friction.
  • Advise on footwear and socks to remove the source of the rubbing.

To prevent recurrence, we may complete a gait and running assessment — a genuine area of expertise for our team — to see how pressure is distributed across your feet during walking or running. Where biomechanics are driving the problem, options such as custom orthotics (3D scanned and 3D printed in-house) can help redistribute pressure and reduce friction hotspots. We'll also discuss practical strategies for managing moisture, lacing techniques and footwear suited to your activity.

When Should I Seek Help for a Blister?

See a podiatrist if a blister is large, very painful, recurring in the same spot, or showing signs of infection — increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus or red streaking. People living with diabetes or reduced foot sensation should have any blister checked promptly, as healing can be slower and complications more likely.

Frequently asked questions

Should I pop a blister myself?

Generally, it's best not to. The overlying skin acts as a natural barrier against infection. If a blister is large or painful, our podiatrists can drain it using sterile technique and dress it properly. If one has already popped, keep the area clean, apply an antiseptic and leave the loose skin in place.

Why do I keep getting blisters in the same place every run?

Recurring blisters in one spot usually mean pressure or friction is being concentrated there. This often relates to footwear fit, sock choice or your running biomechanics. As certified running coaches, our team can complete a gait and running assessment to identify the cause and recommend targeted solutions.

I have diabetes and noticed a blister — what should I do?

Please have it checked promptly. If you live with diabetes or reduced sensation in your feet, blisters can be slower to heal and carry a higher risk of complications. Our team provides diabetic foot care and wound management to help keep your feet healthy and safe.
