Bunions

Bunion treatment in Tuggerah on the Central Coast. Blueprint Podiatry offers non-surgical care, custom 3D-printed orthotics & gait assessment.

A bunion (medically known as Hallux Valgus) is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe when the joint shifts out of alignment and the big toe leans in toward the second toe. At Blueprint Podiatry in Tuggerah, our podiatry team helps Central Coast patients manage bunion pain and slow its progression through evidence-informed, non-surgical care.

What is a bunion?

A bunion develops gradually as the big toe joint (the first metatarsophalangeal joint) drifts out of its normal position. As the toe angles inward, the joint protrudes outward, forming the characteristic bump. Over time the change in alignment can affect how you load your foot and how comfortably you walk.

What causes bunions?

Bunions often have more than one contributing factor, including:

  • Genetics — foot type and joint structure frequently run in families.
  • Foot mechanics — the way you move and load your feet can place uneven pressure on the big toe joint.
  • Footwear — tight, narrow or high-heeled shoes can crowd the toes and aggravate the joint.
  • Activity demands — some sports and dance styles place repeated stress on the forefoot [1].

What are the symptoms?

Common signs include a visible bump at the base of the big toe, redness or swelling, pain when walking or wearing certain shoes, and irritation such as corns or calluses where the joint rubs. If left unaddressed, a bunion may gradually affect foot function and comfort.

How does Blueprint Podiatry assess and treat bunions?

Our three registered podiatrists each hold a Bachelor of Podiatry, are trained in Foot Mobilisation Therapy and are certified Level 1 Running Coaches — so assessment goes beyond the bump itself. We look at your overall foot mechanics, footwear and the way you walk and run, helping us understand why the joint is being overloaded.

Non-surgical care may include:

  • Custom orthotics — scanned using weightbearing 3D technology and 3D printed in-house, so your left and right devices are matched to your feet without external-lab delays.
  • Footwear guidance to reduce pressure on the joint.
  • Padding and offloading to relieve irritation.
  • Foot mobilisation therapy and targeted exercises to support joint movement and strength.
  • Adjunct options available at the clinic, such as shockwave therapy or dry needling, where clinically appropriate.

While conservative care cannot reverse the bony change, it can help manage pain, improve comfort and support better foot function. We do not perform bunion surgery; if your symptoms are severe or not responding to conservative treatment, we can discuss a referral to an appropriate specialist.

When should I see a podiatrist?

If your bunion is becoming painful, changing shape, making footwear difficult, or affecting how you walk, it's worth having it assessed early.

Frequently asked questions

Can bunions be treated without surgery?

In many cases, yes. Conservative care — including custom orthotics, footwear advice, padding and foot mobilisation — can help manage discomfort and support foot function. It won't reverse the bony change, but it may slow progression and improve comfort.

Do I need a referral to see a podiatrist for bunions?

No referral is needed for a standard appointment. If you have a Medicare EPC (Chronic Disease Management) plan or DVA cover, bring the relevant paperwork and we can discuss how that applies to your care.

Will orthotics fix my bunion?

Orthotics don't straighten a bunion, but they can help redistribute pressure and support better foot mechanics, which may reduce pain and irritation. Our orthotics are 3D scanned and printed in-house, matched individually to your left and right feet.
