Bursitis
Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa — a small, fluid-filled sac that cushions areas where tendons, muscles or bones move against one another. In the foot and ankle, an inflamed bursa can cause localised pain, swelling and tenderness that often worsens with pressure or activity.
Bursae help joints and tendons glide smoothly. When one becomes irritated, the resulting inflammation can make everyday walking, standing or running uncomfortable. The good news is that bursitis is usually manageable with the right combination of offloading, footwear changes and a clear plan to address what caused it in the first place.
What causes bursitis in the feet?
Foot and ankle bursitis is most often driven by repetitive pressure or friction on a particular area. Common contributors include:
- Repetitive load from activities such as running, jumping or long periods on your feet
- Ill-fitting or tight footwear that rubs or compresses a specific spot
- Foot structure and biomechanics — the way your foot loads and moves can concentrate pressure on certain joints
- Foot deformities such as bunions, which can change how forces travel through the foot
- Certain medical conditions that increase inflammation
Bursae can form almost anywhere in the foot, but they're common around the ankle, the back of the heel and between the metatarsal heads (the ball of the foot) [1].
What are the symptoms of foot bursitis?
Foot bursitis typically presents with:
- Pain, swelling and tenderness over the affected area
- Pain that worsens with movement or direct pressure
- Skin that may appear red and feel warm over an inflamed bursa
Because these symptoms can overlap with other foot conditions, an accurate diagnosis matters.
How does Blueprint Podiatry assess and treat bursitis?
Our podiatry team begins with a thorough clinical examination to pinpoint the affected bursa and, importantly, work out why it became irritated. Where appropriate, we may recommend imaging to assess the extent of the inflammation.
Every podiatrist at Blueprint Podiatry holds a Bachelor of Podiatry and is a certified Level 1 Running Coach, so we place real emphasis on gait and running assessment — identifying the loading patterns that often drive bursitis in active patients.
Treatment is tailored to your situation and may include:
- Offloading the affected area to reduce pressure and friction
- Custom orthotics, which we 3D scan and 3D print in-house, designed as patient-matched left/right devices to redistribute load
- Footwear advice to remove the source of rubbing or compression
- Activity modification to allow the bursa to settle
- Adjunct therapies available at our clinic, such as shockwave therapy and dry needling, where clinically indicated
- Foot mobilisation therapy to address joint mechanics
Our aim is to help manage your symptoms and reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
When should you seek help?
If you have persistent foot or ankle pain, swelling or warmth — particularly if it's limiting your activity or not settling with rest — it's worth having it assessed. Early care can prevent a minor irritation from becoming a long-standing problem. Seek prompt attention if the area becomes very red, hot or you feel unwell, as this can indicate infection.

Frequently asked questions
How long does foot bursitis take to settle?
Recovery varies with the cause and how long it's been present. Many cases improve over a few weeks once pressure is offloaded and the underlying contributor is addressed, but persistent cases can take longer. We'll give you a realistic timeframe after your assessment.
Do I need custom orthotics for bursitis?
Not always — but for bursitis driven by foot mechanics or pressure points, custom orthotics can help redistribute load. At Blueprint Podiatry we 3D scan and 3D print our orthotics in-house, creating patient-matched left and right devices. We'll only recommend them if they suit your situation.
Can I keep running with bursitis?
Often some activity modification is needed while the bursa settles. Because every podiatrist on our team is a certified running coach, we can usually help you adjust your training and footwear rather than stopping completely — then guide your return to full running.
