Callus

Painful or thickened calluses? Blueprint Podiatry in Tuggerah helps assess and manage callus on the feet for patients across the Central Coast.

A callus is an area of thickened, hardened skin that forms in response to repeated pressure, friction or irritation. It's your body's natural way of protecting the skin underneath — but when a callus becomes too thick or sits over a sensitive spot, it can turn uncomfortable or even painful.

What is a callus?

Calluses develop where the skin is exposed to ongoing load. On the feet, they most commonly appear on the heels, the balls of the feet and the sides of the big toe. While the build-up itself is a protective response, the underlying issue is usually mechanical — meaning the skin is responding to how and where pressure is being applied as you stand, walk and move.

Common causes and symptoms

Calluses can be triggered by a range of factors, including:

  • Abnormal foot mechanics or uneven weight distribution
  • Footwear that's too tight, too loose or poorly cushioned
  • High-impact activities such as running or sport
  • Certain foot shapes or prominent bony areas
  • Dry skin, which can make hardened areas more uncomfortable

You might notice thickened, rough or yellowish skin, areas that feel tender under pressure, or a sense of walking on something hard. Left unaddressed, a deep or central callus can become genuinely sore.

How does Blueprint Podiatry assess and treat callus?

Removing the thickened skin only solves half the problem — the other half is working out why it formed in the first place. Our podiatry team (three registered podiatrists, each holding a Bachelor of Podiatry) focuses on both.

At your appointment we'll:

  • Assess the underlying cause — examining your foot structure, footwear and how you load your feet. Because every one of our podiatrists is a certified Level 1 Running Coach, we can offer genuine gait and running analysis where activity or sport is a contributing factor.
  • Reduce the callus — carefully and comfortably removing thickened skin using specialised instruments to relieve pressure.
  • Address the cause — this may include footwear advice, skin-care guidance, and in some cases custom orthotic therapy. Our orthotics are 3D scanned while weightbearing and 3D printed in-house, allowing us to offload high-pressure areas precisely without an external-lab delay.

Treatment is tailored to you, and our aim is always to help manage recurrence — not just treat the symptom on the day.

When should you see a podiatrist about a callus?

It's worth booking an appointment if a callus is painful, keeps coming back, is cracking or bleeding, or if you have diabetes or reduced circulation. In these cases professional care is especially important, and self-treatment with blades or harsh removers is best avoided.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just file or shave a callus off at home?

Gentle filing of mild calluses can be fine, but using blades or strong acid removers at home risks injury and infection. If a callus is painful, deep or recurring — or you have diabetes — it's safer to have it managed by a podiatrist.

Will the callus come back after treatment?

Reducing a callus relieves the immediate discomfort, but it can return if the underlying pressure isn't addressed. That's why we look at your footwear, foot mechanics and activity, and may recommend orthotic therapy to help manage recurrence over time.

Do you treat patients with diabetes who have calluses?

Yes. Calluses warrant extra care if you have diabetes or reduced circulation, as the skin underneath can be vulnerable. We offer diabetic foot care and will manage your calluses safely as part of a broader foot-health review.
