What is cellulitis?

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of the deeper layers of the skin (the dermis and the tissue beneath it) that causes the affected area to become red, warm, swollen and painful, often spreading and increasing in size if left untreated. It most commonly occurs on the lower legs and feet, and it requires prompt medical treatment — usually antibiotics prescribed by a GP or doctor [1].

If you suspect cellulitis on your foot or lower leg, it's important to act quickly. Below, our podiatry team explains what to look for, how we assess it, and when to seek urgent care.

What causes cellulitis, and what are the symptoms?

Cellulitis develops when bacteria enter the skin, usually through a break such as a cut, crack, blister, insect bite, tinea (athlete's foot), or a wound that hasn't healed properly [1][2]. On the feet, even small skin breaks can become an entry point.

Common signs and symptoms include:

• Redness that may spread and grow in size
• Skin that feels warm, swollen and tender to touch
• Pain in the affected area
• Sometimes fever, chills or generally feeling unwell

People with weakened immune systems, poor circulation, diabetes, lymphoedema, or chronic skin conditions are at greater risk, as are older adults [1][2]. For people living with diabetes in particular, foot infections need careful, timely attention.

How does Blueprint Podiatry assess and manage cellulitis?

Our podiatry team can examine your foot and lower leg, identify likely signs of cellulitis, and help pinpoint the underlying skin break or wound that may have allowed bacteria in. Because cellulitis requires antibiotic treatment that a doctor prescribes, our role is to recognise the condition early and refer you promptly to your GP or, where urgent, to emergency care.

Beyond the infection itself, we focus on what we can help manage as podiatrists — the foot health factors that contribute to skin breaks and recurrence. This may include:

• Wound management to support healing and reduce reinfection risk
• Diabetic foot care for those at higher risk of complications
• Treatment of dermatological foot conditions such as tinea or cracked heels that can act as entry points
