Pregnancy and your feet

Foot pain, swelling or arch changes during pregnancy? Blueprint Podiatry in Tuggerah helps Central Coast mums-to-be stay comfortable on their feet.

Pregnancy commonly changes your feet because the hormone relaxin loosens ligaments while extra body weight increases the load on your feet — this can flatten your arches, widen your feet and cause swelling. The good news is these changes are normal, and there's plenty we can do to help you stay comfortable.

Why do feet change during pregnancy?

During pregnancy your body releases relaxin, a hormone that softens ligaments to prepare your pelvis for childbirth. While this is essential, relaxin doesn't only affect the pelvis — ligaments throughout the body, including those supporting your feet, become more flexible. As a result, the arches may flatten and the feet may spread and widen.

At the same time, healthy weight gain places extra pressure on your feet and on the vascular system in your legs. Together, these changes can lead to aching, fatigue, swelling and a feeling that your shoes no longer fit the way they used to.

Is it normal for feet to swell during pregnancy?

Yes. Swelling, known as oedema, in the feet and ankles is very common, particularly in the second and third trimesters. Increased fluid retention and pressure on the lower limbs mean swelling is often most noticeable at the end of the day or after long periods on your feet.

Helpful self-care includes elevating your feet when resting, staying gently active, wearing comfortable and supportive footwear, and avoiding prolonged standing or sitting. If swelling appears suddenly, is severe, or affects one leg more than the other, contact your GP or midwife promptly, as this needs medical review.

Will my feet return to normal after birth?

Some changes, like swelling, usually settle in the weeks after birth. Other changes can be longer-lasting — it's not uncommon for arches to stay flatter or for feet to remain slightly wider, meaning some mums find they go up a shoe size. Wearing well-fitted, supportive footwear during and after pregnancy can help reduce discomfort as your body adjusts.

How does Blueprint Podiatry help?

Our podiatry team — three registered podiatrists, each with a Bachelor of Podiatry and training in Foot Mobilisation Therapy — takes a gentle, pregnancy-appropriate approach. A typical consultation may include:

  • A thorough assessment of your foot posture, gait and footwear.
  • Advice on supportive shoes and simple strategies to manage swelling and fatigue.
  • Custom orthotics where appropriate, designed from a weightbearing 3D scan and 3D printed in-house, to support changing arches and ease pressure.
  • Hands-on foot mobilisation therapy and tailored exercises to help manage aches and stiffness.

We focus on conservative, comfortable care suited to each stage of pregnancy, and we'll always coordinate with your GP or midwife where needed.

When should you seek help?

Book an appointment if you have persistent foot or arch pain, worsening swelling, changes to your walking, or shoes that no longer fit comfortably. Early support can make day-to-day life — and being on your feet — much easier.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to see a podiatrist while pregnant?

Yes. Podiatry care during pregnancy is gentle and non-invasive, focusing on footwear advice, swelling management, support for changing arches and hands-on therapy. We tailor everything to your stage of pregnancy and work alongside your GP or midwife.

Can orthotics help with pregnancy foot pain?

They can. As your arches flatten and weight increases, custom orthotics may help support your feet and reduce pressure. At our Tuggerah clinic, orthotics are made from a weightbearing 3D scan and 3D printed in-house, so they're matched to your feet.

Do I need a referral to come in?

No referral is needed for a standard appointment. If you're accessing care through Medicare (with a GP care plan), DVA or NDIS, different requirements apply — call us on (02) 4319 4004 and we'll guide you through it.
