Thickened toenails
Thickened toenails are nails that have become abnormally hard, raised or discoloured — often from ageing, repeated trauma, footwear pressure or fungal infection. While usually not dangerous, they can be uncomfortable, difficult to cut at home, and sometimes a sign of an underlying issue worth checking. At Blueprint Podiatry in Tuggerah, our podiatry team can help you manage thickened toenails safely and comfortably.
What causes thickened toenails?
Several factors can lead to thickening:
- Age — nails naturally become thicker and more brittle over the years.
- Trauma or injury — a stubbed toe, dropped object, or repeated micro-trauma can damage the nail bed and change how the nail grows.
- Footwear pressure — tight or ill-fitting shoes place ongoing pressure on the nail.
- Activity — running and other repetitive impact sports can contribute to thickening, particularly if footwear is too small.
- Fungal infection — a common cause of thickening, often alongside discolouration and crumbling at the edges.
- Skin and health conditions — some dermatological and systemic conditions can also affect nail growth.
What are the signs?
Thickened toenails may appear raised, yellow or brown in colour, harder than usual, and prone to splitting or jagged edges. They can become painful under pressure from shoes and are often genuinely difficult to trim with standard nail clippers — which can lead to pain or accidental injury if attempted at home.
How Blueprint Podiatry assesses and treats thickened toenails
Our podiatry team is trained in the proper care and management of thickened nails, with specialised instruments designed to trim, file and thin them safely. Treatment is tailored to you and may include:
- Assessment of the underlying cause — checking for trauma, footwear pressure, fungal involvement or other contributing factors so we treat the reason, not just the nail.
- Safe trimming and reduction — careful cutting and thinning to reduce thickness, improve comfort and tidy the appearance of the nail.
- Ongoing nail care — routine maintenance for those who find thickened nails difficult or unsafe to manage themselves.
- Footwear and activity advice — including guidance for runners, drawing on our team's background as certified running coaches when gait or footwear pressure is a factor.
Where appropriate, we can discuss further options available at the clinic, and provide diabetic foot care for patients who need extra attention with nail and skin health.
When should you see a podiatrist?
It's worth booking in if your nails are painful, increasingly difficult to cut, changing colour, or if you have diabetes or reduced circulation, where foot and nail care is especially important. Early assessment helps us manage discomfort and catch any underlying issues sooner.

Frequently asked questions
Can a podiatrist cut thickened toenails safely?
Yes. Our podiatrists use specialised tools and techniques to trim and thin thickened nails safely and comfortably — something that's often difficult and risky to do with regular clippers at home.
Are thickened toenails always caused by fungus?
No. While fungal infection is a common cause, thickening can also result from ageing, trauma, footwear pressure, running, or certain skin and health conditions. We assess the underlying cause as part of your appointment.
Can thickened toenails be prevented?
Some causes, such as ageing, can't be prevented, but you can reduce the risk by wearing properly fitted footwear that gives your toes room to move, and by keeping your nails regularly trimmed and maintained — including professional care when needed.
