Tired Aching Legs and Clumsiness
Tired aching legs and clumsiness in children
Tired, aching legs and clumsiness in children are often signs that the muscles of the feet and legs are working harder than they should — frequently linked to flat feet, feet that roll in, or joints that aren't tracking in good alignment. A foot and gait assessment can help identify whether these mechanics are contributing to your child's symptoms.
What it is and why it happens
Children who tire quickly, ask to be carried, or avoid walking long distances may be experiencing muscle fatigue. When the feet are flat or roll inwards too much, the muscles in the foot and lower leg have to work overtime to keep the body stable and moving. This extra effort can leave little legs feeling tired and achy sooner than expected.
Clumsiness can also be a symptom of the same underlying issue. When muscles fatigue and joints sit out of alignment, balance and coordination can be affected — so trips, stumbles and a generally unsteady walking or running pattern may follow.
It's worth remembering that many children go through phases of growth and development where these symptoms appear, and not every tired or clumsy child needs treatment. An assessment helps clarify what's typical and what may benefit from support.
Common signs to look for
- Complaining of sore or tired legs, especially after activity
- Wanting to be carried or refusing to walk far
- Frequent tripping, stumbling or appearing unsteady
- Feet that look flat or appear to roll inwards
- Avoiding sport or active play
How Blueprint Podiatry assesses and helps
At our Tuggerah clinic, our podiatry team carries out a thorough foot and gait assessment to understand exactly how your child stands, walks and runs. Because every one of our podiatrists is a certified running coach with training in foot mobilisation therapy, we look closely at the way the whole lower limb moves — not just the feet in isolation.
If the assessment suggests that mechanics are contributing to your child's symptoms, we'll talk you through the options. Treatment may include orthotic therapy to support better alignment and reduce the load on hard-working muscles. When custom orthotics are appropriate, ours are designed using weightbearing 3D scanning and 3D printed in-house — patient-matched for the left and right foot, with no external-lab delay.
We'll always explain our findings in plain language and recommend only what we believe will genuinely help your child.
When to seek help
If your child regularly complains of tired or aching legs, frequently appears clumsy, or is reluctant to keep up with other children during play and sport, it's worth having their feet and walking pattern assessed. Early support can make activity more comfortable and enjoyable.

Frequently asked questions
Will my child definitely need orthotics?
Not necessarily. Orthotics are only one option. After a thorough assessment, we'll recommend what genuinely suits your child — which may include footwear advice, foot mobilisation therapy or other supports. Any custom orthotics we make are 3D scanned and printed in-house, with no external-lab delay.

At what age can my child have a foot and gait assessment?
There's no set age — if you've noticed your child tiring easily, complaining of sore legs, or seeming clumsy, an assessment can be helpful. Our podiatrists tailor the assessment to your child's age and stage of development.
Can I claim my child's appointment through private health or Medicare?
Yes. We offer HICAPS on-the-spot claiming for private health funds. Medicare EPC referrals are also accepted (a small gap applies and we don't bulk bill). Our reception team is happy to help you understand your options when you book.
