Tired legs and cramping
Tired legs and muscle cramping can occur when leg muscles are working harder than they should — often linked to foot and leg alignment, muscle overuse, mineral imbalances or poor circulation. A thorough biomechanical assessment can help identify whether your foot mechanics are part of the picture and guide a treatment plan from there.
What causes tired legs and cramping?
Cramps and aching, fatigued legs can have several underlying causes, including:
- Muscle overuse — when the leg muscles work overtime to compensate for poor foot or leg alignment.
- Foot and lower-limb mechanics — flat feet, high arches or rotational issues can place extra load on certain muscle groups.
- Mineral or electrolyte imbalances — such as low magnesium, potassium or calcium.
- Reduced blood circulation — when muscles aren't receiving enough oxygen-rich blood.
In children, poor foot and leg alignment is a common reason for complaints of tired legs. Many kids will ask to be carried after walking only a short distance, or avoid activity altogether, because their muscles fatigue more quickly than they should.
How does Blueprint Podiatry assess tired legs and cramping?
Our podiatry team begins with a full biomechanical assessment and gait analysis to understand how your feet, legs and walking pattern are working together. This helps us determine whether muscle overuse is connected to your foot mechanics and alignment.
Every member of our podiatry team holds a Bachelor of Podiatry, training in Foot Mobilisation Therapy, and is a certified Level 1 Running Coach — which means our gait and running analysis is genuinely thorough, whether you're a busy parent, a weekend walker or a runner.
If your assessment points to alignment or overuse as a factor, treatment may include:
- Custom orthotics — weightbearing 3D scanned and 3D printed in-house, with patient-matched left and right devices to support better alignment and reduce muscle strain.
- Foot mobilisation therapy to improve joint mobility and function.
- Footwear and load-management advice to ease everyday strain.
- Additional in-clinic modalities such as shockwave therapy or dry needling where clinically appropriate.
For children, gentle, age-appropriate strategies focus on supporting healthy development and making walking and play more comfortable.
When should you seek help?
If muscle cramps occur during walking and ease with rest, this may indicate a problem with blood supply to the muscles. In this case, please see your GP as soon as you can, as this can need prompt medical attention. We're also happy to assess foot- and gait-related causes alongside your GP's care.
It's worth booking an assessment if tired legs are limiting your activity, if your child regularly complains of sore or tired legs, or if cramping is becoming frequent.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my child always want to be carried after a short walk?
Children with poor foot or leg alignment often experience muscle fatigue more quickly, which can show up as tired legs and a reluctance to keep walking. A biomechanical assessment and gait analysis can help us understand what's happening and recommend supportive options.
Can orthotics help with tired legs and cramping?
If your assessment shows that foot alignment or muscle overuse is contributing, custom orthotics may help by supporting better alignment and reducing strain on overworked muscles. At Blueprint Podiatry, our orthotics are 3D scanned and 3D printed in-house. Whether orthotics are right for you depends on your individual assessment.
Should I worry about leg cramps when I walk?
Cramping that comes on during walking and settles with rest can sometimes signal reduced blood supply to the muscles, so we recommend seeing your GP promptly. We can also assess any foot- and gait-related factors as part of your overall care.
