What is a fungal nail infection?

A fungal nail infection (onychomycosis) is when fungi infect the nail and surrounding tissue, often causing discolouration, thickening, brittleness and changes in nail shape. How does Blueprint Podiatry treat fungal nails?

Our assessment

Effective treatment starts with an accurate picture of what's going on. Our podiatry team evaluates the condition and severity of your nails, considers your general foot health and medical history, and screens for contributing factors. As an adjunct to clinical assessment, we may use a Wood's lamp (UV) to help screen the skin and nails for certain fungal and bacterial involvement. It's worth noting that not all organisms fluoresce under UV, so this supports — rather than replaces — careful clinical examination.

Importantly, several conditions can mimic a fungal infection (trauma, psoriasis or other nail changes), so getting the assessment right helps ensure your treatment is appropriate.

Our treatment approach

Once we understand your nails, we devise a personalised plan that may include:

• Professional nail reduction and debridement — carefully thinning and reducing thickened, distorted nails to relieve pressure and discomfort, and to help topical treatments penetrate more effectively.
• Topical antifungal treatment and guidance on correct, consistent application.
• Footwear, hygiene and self-care advice to address the conditions fungi thrive in.
• Preventive strategies to reduce the risk of the infection spreading or recurring.

Where a nail is significantly damaged, ingrown or persistently problematic, our team also offers nail surgery (partial nail avulsion) at the clinic and can discuss whether this is an option for you.

What to expect

Fungal nail infections respond slowly, because healthy nail has to grow out to replace the affected portion — this can take many months. We'll set realistic expectations from the start, monitor your progress, and adjust your plan along the way. We use language like help manage and may include deliberately: outcomes vary between individuals, and we don't promise cures.

Funding and rebates

Blueprint Podiatry offers HICAPS for on-the-spot private health claiming. We accept Medicare EPC referrals (a small gap applies — not bulk billed), DVA Gold and White cards (no gap), and NDIS for self- and plan-managed participants at standard rates. We do not offer bulk billing or home visits.
