Moon Boots & Ankle Braces

Moon boots & ankle braces at Blueprint Podiatry Tuggerah help stabilise foot and ankle injuries. Fitted and guided by our Central Coast podiatry team.

What are moon boots and ankle braces?

Moon boots (also called CAM walkers or walking boots) and ankle braces are supportive devices used to immobilise, stabilise and protect the foot and ankle while you recover from injury or manage an ongoing condition. A moon boot offers firmer, full-foot immobilisation, while an ankle brace provides lighter, more targeted support — and choosing the right one for your situation can make a real difference to how comfortably and confidently you recover.

At Blueprint Podiatry in Tuggerah, our podiatry team supplies and fits high-quality moon boots and ankle braces, and guides you on exactly how and when to use them.

When might you need one?

Moon boots and ankle braces are commonly used to help manage:

  • Ankle sprains or strains
  • Foot or ankle fractures
  • Post-surgical recovery
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Arthritis in the foot or ankle
  • Stabilising the ankle joint
  • Chronic ankle instability
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Reducing pressure on the foot or ankle
  • Helping prevent further injury

The right device controls movement and offloads stressed tissues, giving them the protected environment they need to settle and heal.

How does Blueprint Podiatry assess and fit them?

The correct choice — and the correct fit — matters. A boot or brace that's too loose won't protect the area properly, while one that's poorly fitted can create new problems elsewhere.

Our three registered podiatrists each hold a Bachelor of Podiatry and are trained in Foot Mobilisation Therapy, so your assessment looks at more than the injury itself. We consider how you move, your activity goals and any compensations developing in the way you walk. Because every one of our podiatrists is also a certified Level 1 Running Coach, we're well placed to assess your gait and plan a return to walking, sport or running once the protective phase is complete.

During your appointment, our team will:

  • Assess your injury, symptoms and movement
  • Recommend whether a moon boot or ankle brace is most appropriate
  • Fit the device correctly and check it provides the right level of support
  • Show you how to put it on, wear it and care for it
  • Discuss your recovery plan and the next steps

Where it's clinically helpful, we can also draw on other in-clinic services — such as foot mobilisation therapy, shockwave therapy, dry needling, or custom 3D-printed orthotics — to support your longer-term recovery once you're out of the boot.

When should you seek help?

If you've rolled your ankle, had a fall, or have foot or ankle pain that's stopping you walking normally, it's worth being assessed early. Sudden swelling, bruising, an inability to bear weight, or pain that isn't improving all warrant a professional opinion. Prompt, appropriate support may help prevent ongoing instability and re-injury.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral to be fitted for a moon boot or ankle brace?

No referral is needed to see our podiatry team. If you have a Medicare EPC plan, DVA card or private health cover, bring the relevant details — we offer HICAPS on-the-spot claiming, accept DVA Gold and White cards, and can process Medicare EPC plans (a small gap applies; we don't bulk bill).

How long will I need to wear my moon boot?

This depends entirely on your injury and how you're healing, so there's no single answer. Our podiatrists will give you a tailored timeframe at your appointment and review your progress, gradually transitioning you out of the boot when it's safe to do so.

Can I still walk and drive in a moon boot?

A moon boot is designed to let you walk while protecting the injured area, though comfort varies between people and injuries. Driving can be unsafe in a boot, particularly on your right foot — we'll discuss your individual situation and advise you accordingly.
