Wound Management & Care in Tuggerah

Wound management is the specialised assessment, treatment and ongoing care of foot and lower limb wounds — such as diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers and slow-healing wounds — to support healing, reduce the risk of infection and prevent complications. At Blueprint Podiatry in Tuggerah, our podiatry team provides comprehensive, evidence-based wound care tailored to your individual needs.

What is wound management and why does it matter?

Wounds on the foot and lower leg can be slow to heal because of factors like reduced circulation, nerve changes (neuropathy), pressure from walking, and underlying conditions such as diabetes. Without appropriate care, even a small wound can become a serious problem.

Common wounds we help manage include:

  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Venous or arterial ulcers
  • Surgical wounds on the foot
  • Slow-healing or non-healing wounds
  • Wounds at risk of, or affected by, infection

Warning signs that a wound needs professional attention include increasing redness, swelling, warmth, pain, unusual odour, discharge, or a wound that simply isn't improving over time.

How does Blueprint Podiatry assess and treat foot wounds?

Our three registered podiatrists each hold a Bachelor of Podiatry and bring a thorough, methodical approach to wound care. We begin with a careful assessment of the wound itself, your circulation and sensation, footwear, and any contributing factors like pressure points or gait.

From there, we work with you to develop a personalised wound care plan that may include:

  • Wound cleaning and debridement to remove non-viable tissue and support a healthier healing environment
  • Modern, evidence-based dressings selected to suit the wound type and stage [1]
  • Offloading pressure through padding, footwear advice or custom devices to take strain off the affected area
  • Infection monitoring and management, with referral to your GP or specialist where appropriate
  • Education and self-care guidance so you and your family feel confident caring for the wound at home between visits

Because every podiatrist on our team also has training in gait analysis, we're well placed to identify pressure and movement issues that may be contributing to wounds on weight-bearing areas. Where ongoing pressure relief is needed, our in-house 3D-scanned, 3D-printed custom orthotics can be incorporated into your care.

Evidence suggests that involving patients and carers in structured wound care education can improve outcomes and confidence at home [2] — so we'll always take the time to explain what we're doing and why.

When should I seek help for a foot wound?

If you have diabetes, poor circulation or reduced sensation in your feet, it's wise to have any new wound assessed promptly — early care can prevent small problems becoming serious. Please seek urgent medical attention if a wound shows signs of spreading infection or you feel generally unwell.

We support patients across the Central Coast, including Tuggerah, Wyong, The Entrance and Berkeley Vale, and welcome DVA, Medicare EPC, NDIS and private health (HICAPS) clients.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral to see a podiatrist for wound care?

No referral is needed to book a standard appointment. However, if you'd like to use a Medicare EPC plan or are a DVA cardholder, your GP can arrange the relevant referral or care plan. We're happy to liaise with your GP throughout your care.

Can you manage diabetic foot ulcers?

Yes. Diabetic foot ulcers are one of the most common wounds we help manage. Our podiatrists focus on offloading pressure, appropriate dressings, infection monitoring and ongoing diabetic foot care, working alongside your GP or specialist where needed. We can't guarantee a cure, but we aim to support healing and reduce the risk of complications.

How often will I need appointments for a wound?

This depends on the type, size and stage of your wound. Some wounds need frequent reviews and dressing changes early on, then less often as they improve. We'll discuss a realistic schedule with you at your first visit and adjust it as your wound heals.
